Hutchinson’s water treatment combines biological filtration and reverse osmosis technologies. The city’s water distribution consists of a 1.5 million gallon finished water reservoir, three 500,000 gallon water towers, over 5000 water meters with automated meter reading transmitters, more than 88 miles of water mains, and almost a thousand fire hydrants for community fire protection.
Water Source & Treatment Process
The City of Hutchinson provides drinking water to its residents from a groundwater source. Five wells surrounding the water plant range from 400 to 475 feet deep and draw water from the Quaternary Buried Artesian aquifer. Inside the water plant, raw water from the wells is split into two parallel treatment processes: biological filtration and reverse osmosis.
Biological filtration uses nonpathogenic microorganisms to remove iron, manganese, and naturally occurring ammonia from the raw water. Seven 12-foot diameter biological pressure tanks produce a total biological filtration flow from 300 gallons per minute (gpm) up to 1800 gpm.
Reverse osmosis (RO) uses water pressure to push the raw well water through a semipermeable membrane removing iron, manganese, ammonia, and hardness. Each of the three RO machines has a design flow of 900 gpm of treated water, producing a total RO flow from 900 gpm up to 2700 gpm.
The two treatment processes are combined at a 25% biological filtration and 75% RO ratio, producing finished water that is about 7 grains per gallon total hardness. To complete the treatment process, the blended water’s pH is increased to 8.1 to control corrosion, free chlorine is adjusted to 1.2 parts per million (ppm) for disinfection, and the water is fluoridated to 0.7 ppm.Frequently Asked Questions
