Hutchinson Highway 15/Main Street
Project Begins April 13
WILLMAR, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) will begin the Highway 15/Main Street reconstruction project in Hutchinson on Monday, April 13, 2020. In preparation for the project start date, a temporary signal will be installed at Highway 7 and County Road 115 on Friday, April 3, 2020. The temporary signal will provide detour traffic control for the duration of the project.
Following guidance from state health officials and to prevent further spread of COVID-19, MnDOT crews will maintain social distancing practices while working.
The Hutchinson Main Street project includes the reconstruction of Highway 15 from Second Avenue North to Fifth Avenue South. This part of the project will require a detour, which goes into effect on April 13. Motorists traveling through Hutchinson will be routed on Highway 7 and County Road 115. Local traffic to homes and businesses in the downtown area will be routed on Franklin and Adams Streets. At least two intersections (Washington, Second Avenue South, and, Fifth Avenue South) will be kept open at a time for local traffic to cross Highway 15.
Included with the project, Highway 15 will be resurfaced from Fifth Avenue South to just north of the roundabout at County Road 115/Airport Road, and a northbound left-turn lane will be constructed at Linden Avenue. This part of the project will be completed under traffic. Motorists can expect temporary lane closures and short delays.
Sidewalks and pedestrian crossings will be upgraded along both project areas to make them accessible for all people.
The City of Hutchinson will replace utilities (sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and water) in downtown Hutchinson under Highway 15/Main Street during reconstruction.
Benefits of the project include:
- Smoother road surface
- Modern sanitary sewer and water
- Updated city and state infrastructure
- Upgraded sidewalks and pedestrian crossings
The state portion of the project is estimated to cost $11.5 million and to be complete by October 31, 2020. Please note that the start and end dates could change due to unforeseeable circumstances, and that all traffic impacts may not be known at this time. The contractor is R & R Excavating, Inc., of Hutchinson.
A virtual open house of the project will be available April 10-24 on the project website.
