Press Release – Hutchinson City Council Looking to Fill Council Vacancy on an Interim Basis

PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

With the recent announcement of council member Brandon Begnaud’s resignation from his position on the city council, plans are under way to have a special election to fill that seat on February 8, 2022. In the meantime, the City Council is looking to fill the vacancy on an interim basis until a special election can be held.

Effective immediately, anyone interested in serving on the City Council in an interim basis can do so by expressing that interest by filling out a “City Council Interest Form” and submitting it to the administrative department at the city of Hutchinson. Forms can be picked up at the Hutchinson City Center, 111 Hassan Street SE, or can be downloaded from the City’s website at hutchinsonmn.gov. The deadline to submit an interest form is by 4 p.m. on Friday, July 9. Forms can be submitted in person at the City Center or can be emailed to [email protected].

Those interested in serving on the City Council must be 21 years of age, have been a resident for at least 30 days prior to being appointed, and are eligible to vote within the state of Minnesota. The selected individual will assume their duties in middle to late July and will be expected to serve until the special election results are certified in mid-February.

The candidate filing period for the special election in February will be from July 27 to August 10. If more than two candidates file for office, a primary election will take place on November 2, 2021 to narrow the number of candidates down to two for the special election in February. Questions regarding the upcoming special election can be directed to Melissa Starke at [email protected] or at (320) 234-4202.
