Buying or Putting in a Swimming Pool?

Summer time is here and that means swimming pools are going up to help beat the heat!  Here are a few important details to be aware of as you consider buying or putting up a swimming pool this summer.

  •  Prefabricated swimming pools that are more than 24 inches deep and have a capacity of more than 5,000 gallons require a City permit according to the MN Building Code.  Most pool manufacturers have information about their pool capacities available on their websites.
  •  Swimming pools must be fully enclosed by a fence that does not afford any external handholds or footholds to prevent climbing and is a minimum of 4 feet in height.
  •  The enclosing fence has to have a self-locking and self-closing gate with the locking device within 12 inches of the top of the fence.

The entire City ordinance regulating swimming pools is available in the City Code under Section 154.120. (click here for ordinance details).  If you have questions regarding swimming pool requirements, you may call the Hutchinson Building Department at (320) 234-4216.
