NOTE: The following information is intended to give a general outline of most title transfers and may not be complete or apply to all situations. The only way to know if you have all of the required information is to present it to a representative at a License Center. Please Email Us with any questions.
Effective January 1, 2016, per Minnesota Statutes 2014, Section 169.798 ,Subd.4 Every owner applying for a self-propelled motor vehicle or motorcycle/moped registration, re-registration, or transfer of ownership must provide proof of insurance. Required insurance information includes the insurance company’s name, the policy number and the policy expiration date for the motor vehicle or motorcycle.
Is there a Lienholder Listed on the title?
If the title has a lienholder listed on it, we will need a lien release. Some state’s titles will have a designated area directly on the title to release the lien. For Some states, you will need to obtain a separate document to release the lien. Be sure this separate document contains a matching VIN number and contains a notarized signature. In either case, the owner must provide a lien release form the lienholder before the title ownership can be transferred.
Application for Minnesota Title
All purchasers must complete an Application to Title and Register a Motor Vehicle. This form will allow the State of Minnesota to transfer the title and registration of the vehicle to Minnesota. The seller will be signing the title, so it is not necessary for the seller to sign this form. Please view this Application Guide to assist you with what needs to be completed. You may also Email Us a copy of the front and back of your non-Minnesota title along with your purchase price, purchase date, insurance information & lien holder information and we will reply with instructions.
Important!
Any alteration or erasure to the title will void it. This includes crossing out or using correction fluid/tape on incorrect information once it has been written. If an alteration occurs, both buyers and sellers will need to complete and sign a corrected title form. If the alteration is to remove a persons’ name from the buyer’s section you must complete this form. All other alterations or corrections (including the date, odometer corrections and purchase price) please complete this form. Please contact us with any questions.
