Driver’s License Exams
Driver’s License & Permit Tests are available in Hutchinson on Thursdays at the City Center, 111 Hassan St SE.
Exams and road tests are administered by the State of Minnesota. All general knowledge and road tests are given by appointment, by the State of Minnesota. You can also call the State of Minnesota directly at (651) 284-1234.
Motorcycle, reinstatement and CDL endorsement tests are available as walk-ins.
Study Manuals are available for purchase at our DMV location or you can Study from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety website.

Renewing your driver’s license in our office does not require an appointment. However, if you prefer, you can schedule an appointment with our staff.
From the Department of Homeland Security’s webpage: Federal law now requires every air traveler 18 years of age and older to have a REAL ID – compliant driver’s license or identification card, state-issued enhanced driver’s license, or another TSA acceptable form of identification at airport security checkpoints for domestic air travel. Completing a pre-application is a helpful way to expedite your application process. You are taken through the application process at your own pace and it is very helpful in gathering the documents you will need to bring with you when you visit our office.
- You will need to enter your Social Security Number. If you do not have one, please follow the prompts.
- Once you have completed the pre-application, print your confirmation page or record your confirmation number to bring with to our office.
- If you are applying for a Real or Enhanced Driver’s License, you will need to bring ALL your documents with you to our office.
- We accept cash, credit cards, personal checks and money orders. There will be an additional fee when using a credit card and you MUST have a valid MN driver’s license/ID card and your check MUST be printed with your full name and address when using a check. We also have an ATM located in our lobby.
Driver’s License for All
All Minnesota residents, regardless of legal presence in the United States, can begin the process of obtaining a standard, Instruction Permit, Driver’s License or Identification Card.
What you need to know:
- Applicants need to provide one primary and one secondary identification document or two primary documents from the standard document requirements list for Driver’s License for All [PDF].
- Applicants must pass the Class D written knowledge test and road skill test to receive a Standard Driver’s License.
- A practice knowledge test is available [PDF].
- A study guide is available [PDF].
- Appointments are required for tests.
- Information you provide on your application is private and DVS cannot share it with civil immigration enforcement or disclose the information to state or federal agencies that primarily enforce immigration law.
- The Driver’s License for All law does not apply to REAL ID, Enhanced Driver’s Licenses/ID cards or to Commercial Driver’s Licenses.
- A Standard Permit, Driver’s License or ID card are generally accepted as proof of identification unless a REAL ID is required.
